More Than a Doctor’s Visit: Finding Your Primary Care Home in Suwanee
By Dr. Sindy Mulumba, Family Medicine
STARS Integrative Care with TMS
When most of us think about going to the doctor, we picture the moment something has already gone wrong — the fever that won’t break, the nagging pain we finally can’t ignore, the worry that keeps us up at night. We wait until we have to go. Then we hope whoever sees us can sort it out quickly.
After years in family medicine, here’s what I’ve come to believe: the most powerful care rarely happens in those urgent moments. It happens earlier — in the quiet, ordinary visits when nothing is wrong at all. That’s what primary care is really about. Not just treating illness when it shows up, but knowing you well enough to help you stay well in the first place.
What primary care in Suwanee actually means for you
Your primary care physician is your home base in a healthcare system that can feel scattered and confusing. I’m the person who keeps the whole picture — your history, your medications, the small changes from one year to the next, the family patterns worth watching. When a specialist’s report comes back full of words you’ve never heard, when you’re not sure whether a symptom is worth worrying about, when you just need someone in your corner who already knows you, that’s the role I’m here to fill.
At STARS, I care for adults 18 and older across the full range of family medicine — annual physicals and preventive screenings, managing ongoing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues and cholesterol, same-week visits when something acute comes up, and the honest conversations about sleep, stress, weight and energy that don’t always fit neatly into a single appointment.
The relationship is the medicine
Medicine works better when it’s built on a relationship. When I’ve seen you before, I notice the things a stranger never could — that your blood pressure crept up this year, that you seem more tired than usual, that the number on a lab isn’t alarming on its own but is different for you. Continuity is its own kind of treatment.
That’s why I gently encourage people not to wait for a crisis to find a doctor. Establishing care while you feel fine means that when you do need us — and at some point, everyone does — you’re not starting from scratch with someone who’s meeting you for the very first time on your hardest day. You already have a home to come back to.
The STARS difference: your whole self, under one roof
Here’s something I wish more people understood — your physical health and your mental health are not separate stories. The patient managing diabetes is often also managing anxiety. The exhaustion that looks like a thyroid problem is sometimes depression, and sometimes it’s both. For too long, we’ve asked people to carry those pieces to different buildings and hope someone connects them.
At STARS, they’re connected on purpose. My husband and practice partner, Dr. Chriss Mulumba, leads our behavioral health and psychiatry side, including TMS Therapy and Spravato® for patients who need them. That means if something comes up in your primary care visit that points toward mental health, you’re not handed a phone number and left to navigate alone — you’re already part of a team that talks to each other. Your care moves with you.
We’re also a practice that reflects the community we serve. Our team speaks English, French, Swahili and Haitian Creole, because feeling understood by your doctor shouldn’t depend on which language you grew up speaking.
How to make STARS your health home
Starting is simple. You don’t need a dramatic reason — “I’d like to establish care” is more than enough. We welcome adults 18 and older from Suwanee, Johns Creek, Duluth, Cumming and the surrounding Gwinnett and Forsyth communities, and we’re in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, Humana, and more.
Whether you haven’t seen a doctor in years, you’re new to the area and looking for somewhere to land, or you simply want a physician who treats you like a person and not a chart — I’d be honored to be that doctor for you. This is the eighth and final post in our “Get to Know STARS” series, and I can think of no better note to end on than an invitation: come find your home here.
